Word and Image:  Fall 2009

[image] Our patients often look at identity issues as they go through their cancer treatment.  Whoever they were before they were diagnosed sometimes disappears and they often become labeled as “patients.”

[image] During our Open Art Studio (which is held every week, Wednesdays from 1-4pm in Art for Recovery) conversations about identity are not unusual.  We offered a template and each patient choose the material they wished to use for their bird.

[image] The directive was to create their bird as a self portrait, adding ribbons, beads, feathers, or whatever they felt represented how they saw themselves.

As you can see from the photograph, the birds are quite beautiful and personal to each individual.
