How do I deal with boredom if I quit smoking?

Many people smoke when they are bored. Here are some ways to cope with boredom when you quit:

  • Plan more activities than you have time for.
  • Carry a book, crossword puzzle, or cell phone to keep your hands busy during waiting times.
  • Notice what is going on around you. Look at the shape of buildings. Listen to sounds.
  • Do not stay in the same place too long. Move. Go outdoors if possible, but avoid places you associate with smoking.

For free one-on-one help with quitting, call the Smoking Quitline of the National Cancer Institute at 1-877-448-7848.
