I just recently finished my cancer treatment. My family wants me to get involved as a volunteer, but I'm not sure I'm ready. How can I decide?
The decision about whether or when to become a cancer volunteer is different for each person. As you make your decision, here are some things to think about:
Your health. Do you have enough energy or time to start a new project? Some people start volunteer work by choosing an activity that is easy for them now. Others wait until their health is better.
Your feelings. People often think about their own cancer experience when they get involved as a volunteer. This can be good for some people, as it can help them deal with their own issues. However, it can be upsetting for others. If you feel you are not ready emotionally, take the time you need to help yourself before you offer to help others.
Your comfort in talking about cancer. Some cancer survivors do not want to talk about their own experience. If this is how you feel, find activities in which you do not have to share your personal feelings or thoughts.
