ASK THE CIS:Ask the Cancer Information Service

My resolution for the New Year is to become as healthy as possible. What can I do to reduce my risk of developing cancer?

Congratulations on deciding to take charge of your health. Here are six things you can do to reduce your risk of developing or dying from cancer.

  • Avoid tobacco in any form. If you already use tobacco, get help to quit.
  • Protect your skin from the sun. Stay out of the mid-day sun when possible and use sunscreen regularly. Wear a broad-brimmed hat, long sleeves, and long pants in the sun. Avoid sunlamps and tanning booths.
  • If you drink, drink only small amounts. Men should not have more than two drinks a day, and women should not have more than one.
  • Eat a healthful diet. Choose foods that are low in fat and high in fiber. Enjoy five to nine servings of fruits and vegetables each day. Eat whole-grain breads and cereals.
  • Get regular exercise and maintain your ideal weight. Brisk physical exercise several days each week is important for everyone.
  • Have regular cancer screening tests, such as mammograms, Pap tests, and colorectal exams. These tests can help doctors find cancer early, when treatment is most likely to be effective.

For more information on any of the above topics, talk with your doctor or call the Cancer Information Service at 1-800-4-CANCER.
