When a Parent Has Cancer

Paired Parent Workshop & Child Life Session
For UCSF Cancer Patients and their Families

The Parent Workshop will explore:

• The importance of communication with children about cancer;
• What children need and understand at different ages; and
• Age-appropriate communication techniques.

The Child Life Session will help children:

• Understand serious illness using age-specific teaching tools such as models, dolls and pictures;
• Communicate with adults about their emotions, concerns and need for information; and
• Develop strategies such as imagery, distraction and relaxation to reduce anxiety.

Parents will have the opportunity to increase your confidence in having difficult conversations with your children, receive resources, and connect with others. Children will be grouped by age to ensure the materials and conversation are appropriate and meaningful.

IMPORTANT: There is no fee to attend, but pre-registration is required, either online or at 415-885-3693. Registration will end on March 12 or when full, whichever comes first.
