Benefits of Membership

  • Access to developmental funds through the NCI Cancer Center Support Grant and other resources
  • Potential access to Cancer Center-controlled space
  • Inclusion in the Cancer Center information loop
  • Opportunities for leadership
  • Priority access to Cancer Center shared laboratory resources (Cores)

Membership Responsibilities

  • Willingness to interact scientifically with other Cancer Center members, especially within Cancer Center programs
  • Service to the Cancer Center through participation on committees and/or through public outreach
  • Submission of all therapeutic protocols to the Cancer Center Clinical Research Office. These protocols will be reviewed by the Protocol Review Committee, which must approve institutional and industry protocols prior to submission to the Committee on Human Research.
  • Provision of information on therapeutic protocols to the Cancer Center Data Monitoring Committee for periodic audits. (At this time, the Cancer Center's scientific review and monitoring system, which consists of the Protocol Review and Data Monitoring Committees, reviews only therapeutic intervention trials.)
  • Provision of updates relating to publications, research support, clinical protocols, patient registrations, and other information that may be needed to fulfill requirements for designation as an NCI comprehensive cancer center.
  • Acknowledgement of UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center facilities, space, or assistance, when appropriate, in research publications.
  • Attendance at scheduled functions of the Cancer Center.

Membership Criteria

Member
A full-time faculty member of UCSF who (1) has cancer relevant NIH/NCI funding or peer-reviewed cancer relevant funding from an NCI-recognized organization; or (2) is a clinical science leader as evidenced by leadership of investigator initiated institutional trials with subsequent peer reviewed publications or of federally funded national trials, or by service as committee chair on NCI sponsored clinical research committees (task forces, cooperative group subcommittee, NCI/NIH study sections) or committees within established professional societies (ASCO, ASH, ASTRO, AGA, AUA, ATS, etc); or (3) holds a Cancer Center leadership position. Members may be either programmatically or non-programmatically aligned. Membership is typically limited to two Programs but a third Program is allowable in exceptional cases.

 

Associate Member
A health professional and/or laboratory, clinical, or population research scientist holding a full-time faculty or staff appointment at UCSF who demonstrates involvement in cancer research and/or patient care within the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center but does not qualify as a Member. Associate Members are not officially aligned with Programs, but are often significant participants within them.

All Cancer Center members are expected to contribute to the strength of the Cancer Center through support of Cancer Center activities. Access to Cancer Center controlled space and opportunities for leadership roles are privileges given to Cancer Center Members. Members may compete for developmental funds. Associate Members may also compete for these funds provided that clear evidence of sponsorship (or mentoring) is evident from a Cancer Center Member.


Application Packet
Faculty of UCSF (academic appointment in the Professorial, In-Residence, Clinical X, Clinical, Adjunct, and Professional Research series) can nominate themselves for membership in the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center. An application packet must be submitted containing the following items (to be sent electronically):
