Research Summary

My research program focuses on clinical and translational approaches to studying the development of the Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) in critically ill patients. I have two major areas of focus: (1) the prognostic and pathogenetic value of biomarkers of lung epithelial and endothelial injury in ARDS, including novel approaches to molecular phenotyping of ARDS; and (2) the epidemiology and mechanisms of association between active and passive cigarette smoke exposure and the development of ARDS. I also have a particular interest in the early identification of patients with or at high risk for ARDS, with several publications on clinical and biological approaches to early detection of ARDS.
