Research Summary

Major area of research is the prevention and treatment of smokeless tobacco use among high-risk groups in novel community-based settings (i.e., rural high schools, college and professional athletic programs, dental settings, and the Internet). Margaret M. Walsh is a Professor in the Department of Preventive and Restorative Dental Sciences at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) School of Dentistry. She has conducted research on spit tobacco use and cessation since 1986. She has served as Principal Investigator (PI) for five large-scale, randomized-controlled tobacco cessation intervention trials funded by the NIH and the California Tobacco-related Disease Research Program. Cessation programs developed by Dr. Walsh and colleagues have used dental professionals, school nurses, college athletic trainers, and student peer leaders in their delivery. Most recently, Dr. Walsh was PI of an NIH grant to study ways to translate the Public Health Service Clinical Guidelines for the Treatment of Tobacco Use and Dependence into dental settings. This study was a collaborative effort with Delta Dental one of the largest providers of dental insurance and involved 250 dental practices in CA, PA, and WV.
