The sixth biennial Raising Hope event, on January 31, 2007, was a tremendous success, raising over $3.75 million for the Comprehensive Cancer Center. Held at the UCSF Mission Bay Campus and led by co-chairs Nanci Fredkin and Cathy Podell, the event was attended by more than 700 guests who enjoyed an intimate cabaret-like setting designed by Stanlee Gatti while dining on a gourmet dinner by McCall Associates. A live auction featured tickets to the final show of "American Idol" and a Los Angeles private-jet getaway. But the highlight of the evening was a standing-ovation performance by Bette Midler, the Harlettes, and her orchestra. Singing many of her favorite hits, Ms. Midler ended with an encore of "The Rose." Midler's donation of her performance is a testament to the work of UCSF and the Comprehensive Cancer Center.
