Five UC San Francisco faculty members have been elected to the American Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI) after a highly competitive nomination process.
The ASCI, which is one of the oldest medical honor societies in the United States, received 160 membership nominations for 2016 and recommended 74 nominees for election.
The five faculty members elected are:
Kamran Atabai, MD, an investigator in the Cardiovascular Research Institute at UCSF, where his research interests include apoptotic cell and collagen clearance in health and disease. The work of his laboratory includes examining the role of the extracellular matrix in regulating metabolism, tissue remodeling and smooth muscle function as these processes relate to cardiovascular disease.
Trever Bivona, MD, PhD, an associate professor of Hematology and Oncology and member of the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center. His basic and translational research laboratory is focused on cancer genetics, precision medicine, and the molecular basis of targeted therapy response and resistance.
Margaret Feeney, MD, MMSc, an associate professor of pediatrics in the Division of Experimental Medicine. Her research centers on the immunopathogenesis of HIV and malaria in childhood.
Pamela M. Ling, MD, MPH, a professor in the Department of Internal Medicine, studies tobacco industry marketing strategies targeting young adults, women, and other high-risk population, and new smokeless and novel tobacco product marketing strategies the UCSF Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education.
Rebecca L. Sudore, MD, an associate professor in-residence in the Division of Geriatrics. Her work is dedicated to helping vulnerable older adults and their families make informed medical decisions, especially for advance care planning and at the end-of-life.
The ASCI, established in 1908, comprises more than 3,000 physician-scientists from all medical specialties elected to the Society for their outstanding records of scholarly achievement in biomedical research
The five UCSF faculty members were inducted into the organization with the other newly elected members of the ASCI during an event last week.
