Healing Through Writing

“Healing is a matter of time, but it is sometimes a matter of opportunity.” -Hippocrates

These eight-week workshops are for anyone dealing with cancer and its effects, who is interested in self-exploration and sharing. Studies have shown that the simple act of writing, like art making, about emotionally difficult events or feelings has a positive effect of the immune system. The body can then withstand stress and fight off infection and disease.

Writing and poetry offer a wonderful way to reevaluate your priorities and to discover your personal source of meaning and hope in the face of life-threatening illnesses. It is a place to bring questions - “What has true value for me? How do I want to live now?” It is a quiet space in which the heart can make itself heard. No writing or poetry experience is necessary to participate.

Healing Through Writing workshops are funded in part by The Auxiliary at UCSF Mount Zion Medical Center.

“Stories are antibodies against illness and pain.” -Anatole Broyard
