Training Programs and Medical Education
Minority Training Program in Cancer Control Research
Offered jointly by the UCSF Compr. Cancer Center and the UCLA School of Public Health, this program aims to increase ethnic diversity in the field of cancer control research by encouraging minority students in master’s level health programs as well as master’s trained professionals to pursue a doctoral degree and a career in research.
The UCSF Breast Care Center (BCC) Premedical Internship Program offers recent college graduates the opportunity to gain 1-2 years of experience contributing to progress in basic science, clinical research, and patient care.
UCSF Medical Education
School of Medicine
The core curriculum offers in-depth investigation into cancer pathology and therapy, as well as explorations of relevant disciplines such as epidemiology, genetics, hematology, behavioral sciences, ethics, and CAM. Residencies and fellowships in clinical oncology are offered departmentally.
School of Nursing
The MS Program offers an Oncology specialty in prevention/early detection and in patient care. Options include Advanced Practice Oncology Nursing, Oncology and Genomics Advanced Practice Nursing, and Oncology Gerontological Nurse Practitioner. Customization is available to include pediatric oncology.
School of Dentistry
A fellowship program in oral medicine and MS/PhD degrees in oral biology are offered. Additionally, the Oral Cancer Research Center focuses on the genesis, prevention, and treatment of oral cancer.
School of Pharmacy
PharmD and PhD programs offer studies in chemistry and chemical biology, biological and medical informatics, biophysics, pharmaceutical sciences and pharmacogenomics, and quantitative biology.

Cancer Center faculty members are strongly affiliated with specialized UCSF graduate degree programs, many of which have cancer components.

Graduate Program in Biomedical Sciences (BMS)
The program provides PhD training that applies molecular, cellular, and whole-animal techniques to the investigation of how mammalian cells, tissues, and organs function in health and in disease. One cluster includes basic aspects of oncogene and tumor-suppressor gene function, ligand-receptor interactions, cell cycle regulation, apoptosis, cell-cell adhesion, and metastasis.
Herbert W. Boyer Program in Biological Sciences (PIBS)
PIBS comprises five distinct PhD programs—Biophysics; Immunology; Neuroscience; Chemistry and Chemical Biology; and the Tetrad Program, which encompasses Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Developmental Biology, and Genetics—as well as a postgraduate program in Molecular Medicine.
Graduate Program in Biological and Medical Informatics (BMI)
Modern biology and medicine are data-intensive sciences that require the generation, management, and analysis of complex, heterogeneous information. The BMI Program conducts research and training in the common mathematical and computational approaches that underlie these disciplines.
Chemistry and Chemical Biology (CCB)
This PhD program provides a background in modern chemistry that includes molecular thermodynamics, bioorganic chemistry, computational chemistry, structural biology, and cell biology.
Graduate Group in Biophysics
The group spans research at the interface of physics, biology, and chemistry, and seeks quantitative information about biological processes at the molecular, cellular, and systems levels.
Joint Graduate Group in Bioengineering
Close interaction between researchers at UCSF and UC-Berkeley provides a natural milieu for this cross-institution program for engineers/life-scientists, whose education and experience transcends the traditional boundaries between biomedicine and engineering.
Graduate Program in Pharmaceutical Sciences and Pharmacogenomics
This program leads to a PhD degree with dual focuses on pharmaceutical sciences (disciplines from chemistry to biology and from pharmacology to bioinformatics) and pharmacogenomics, which applies genetics and genomics to drug action and disposition.
