HDFCCC Funds Three Pilot Projects in Support of Community-Engaged Research

The UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center (HDFCCC) has funded three pilot awards of $25,000 to support community-engaged cancer research and translation, education, and outreach addressing the needs of communities in its 25-county catchment area. The projects feature partnerships between community-based organizations and UCSF academic partners and focus on cancer research priorities set by the HDFCCC Community Advisory Board.

Community Wellness Outreach Project

Investigators: Meghan Morris, PhD, MPH, Associate Professor of Epidemiology & Biostatistics, UCSF

Primary Community Partner: Lisa Wynn, Executive Director, UnitedinLove.org

Description: Project focuses on providing tailored support and services to underserved youth of color, expanding access to health and mental health support for low-income families, and addressing nutritional needs in the Hunters Point area.

Empowering Patients, Informing Practice: A Community Study of Complementary Cancer Therapies

Investigators: Mark Renneker, MD, Associate Clinical Professor of Family and Community Medicine, UCSF; Maria T. Chao, DrPH, MPA, Director of Research, UCSF Osher Center for Integrative Health

Primary Community Partner: Christine Mineart, MPH, Program Director, CancerChoices

Description: Community-driven project will collect and analyze community evidence on integrative cancer therapies used by cancer survivors in the San Francisco Bay area. CancerChoices (www.cancerchoices.org) is a free, evidence-based educational website for people with cancer interested in integrative approaches to improve treatment outcomes and quality of life.

Bridging the Gap: Increasing Hereditary Cancer Awareness and Access to Genetic Testing in Communities

Investigators: Dr. Pamela Munster, Center for BRCA Research, UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center

Primary Community Partner: Tina Fernandez, Executive Director, HERS Breast Cancer Foundation

Description: Project aims to identify families affected by breast cancer who are eligible for genetic cancer risk assessment and empower them with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions about getting genetic testing and accessing appropriate care.
