Research Summary
My primary research focus is the supportive care aspects of pediatric hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT), with a goal of decreasing treatment-related morbidity and mortality, especially infections, through clinical trials. I am the past-Chair of the international Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplant Consortium’s (PBMTC) Supportive Care Strategy Group, where I led individuals in the design of pilot multi-center trials in this field. These trials serve as the basis for the design of larger phase III trials in the Children’s Oncology Group (COG). In the COG, I am the Chair of the Cancer Control & Supportive Care Committee, and serve on the Cellular Therapy Committee, overseeing the design of trials in this field.
I was the national principal investigator on the COG protocol ACCL1131: An Open-Label Phase III Trial of Caspofungin vs. Azole Prophylaxis for Patients at High-Risk for Invasive Fungal Infections Undergoing Allogeneic HCT. I was the national vice-chair for COG ACCL1034: Impact of Cleaning with Chlorhexidine Gluconate on Reducing Central Line Associate Bloodstream Infection and Acquisition of Multi-drug Resistant Organisms. I am the national vice-chair of PBMTC SUP1601: Pathogen Identification in Pediatric Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant Patients with Suspected Lower Respiratory Tract Infection.
Other areas of interest include the optimization of conditioning regimens for young patients undergoing HCT. I was the national principal investigator on another COG trial, ASCT1221: A Randomized Phase II Study Comparing Two Different Conditioning Regimens Prior to Allogeneic Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation for Children with JMML.
