As 2024 comes to a close, we offer heartfelt thanks to our clinical teams, scientists, staff and community partners for their dedication and hard work. We especially thank our patients for their trust in allowing us to care for them. The work we do together is critical and drives the future of cancer research and care. As the year winds down, we take a moment to reflect on some of our milestones from this year.
In Memoriam: Felix Feng, MD
It is with great sadness that we mourn our cherished friend and colleague Felix Feng. Felix was a distinguished physician-scientist and beloved at UCSF. He was deeply committed to cancer research and patient care. His legacy will live on through the many lives he touched and the impact of his work.

- Eric J. Small, MD was elected president of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) for the 2025-26 term
- Nynikka Palmer, DrPH, MPH was elected vice president of research for the Academy of Communication in Healthcare
- Nola M. Hylton, PhD, was elected into the National Academy of Medicine (NAM)
- Kathy Giacomini, PhD, was elected to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences (AAA&S).
Honors Bestowed
- Nearly 50 UC San Francisco researchers, including 21 Cancer Center Members, were named to Clarivate’s list of most influential scientists for 2024
- Mack Roach III, MD was awarded a 2024 Gold Medal Award by the American Society for Therapeutic Radiation Oncology (ASTRO)
- Mitch Berger, MD, received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society for Neuro-Oncology (SNO)
- Scarlett Lin Gomez, MD, PhD, was awarded the 2024 AACR Distinguished Lectureship on the Science of Cancer Health Disparities
- Hope Rugo, MD, received the 2024 ESMO Breast Cancer Award
- Neil P. Shah, MD, PhD was awarded the 2024 Rowley Prize for exceptional lifetime achievements in advancing the understanding of the biology of CML
- Michael Rabow, MD was named a Visionary in Palliative Medicine by the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM)
- Kevin Shannon, MD, was honored with the UCSF Liftetime Achievement in Mentoring Award
